Privacy Policy

Chatwell does not collect anything. This page explains what that means and where the one exception is.

The short version

Your conversations never leave your phone. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics, and no server that holds your messages, because there is no server at all. We cannot read what you type, we cannot sell it, we cannot learn from it, and we cannot be made to hand it over, because we never receive it.

What is stored, and where

• Your conversations are stored on your phone only. They are protected using the encryption built into iOS, under a key held in your phone's keychain that is marked so it cannot be copied to iCloud or to another device.
• What you tell us about yourself on the About you screen, meaning a name, what you do and how you would like to be spoken to, is stored the same way, in the same place.
• Your settings, such as light or dark and text size, are stored on your phone.

Deleting your chats in Settings destroys the key along with them, so anything that was not successfully removed becomes unreadable. Deleting the app removes all of it.

The one network request

The first time you open Chatwell it fetches the files that let it answer questions without a connection. That request is a plain download of a fixed file. It carries nothing about you: no identifier, no account, no message, no usage information. After it finishes, the app works with no connection at all.

When something does leave your phone, you do it

Two features send something, and neither happens without you choosing it and seeing exactly what is being sent:

• Sharing a reply. The picture is drawn on your phone and shared wherever you choose. It contains no link back to us.
• Reporting a reply. This opens an email to us containing the reply you are reporting. Nothing is sent until you send it. This is the only circumstance in which any part of a conversation reaches us, and it only happens because you sent it.

Children

Chatwell is not directed at children under 13. Since we collect nothing, we do not knowingly or unknowingly collect information from anybody of any age.

Analytics, advertising, and tracking

There are none. No analytics of any kind, including the sort described as privacy-preserving. No advertising identifiers. No third-party software development kits that report anything. Chatwell does not track you across apps or websites, and there is no data to link to your identity.

Payment

Chatwell is bought once from the App Store. Apple handles the payment and we never see your payment details. There is nothing to renew and nothing to cancel.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date. A change that would send your conversations anywhere would not be a change to this policy; it would be a different product.
